House hunting is hard

I have a new column up about shopping for houses...

I am going through this same process. I have noticed that a) my enthusiasm ebbs and flows, and that b) I hate every single person involved in the process.

From the person who is selling us our loan to the people lining up to show us houses to anyone else professionally involved in the process comes the unmistakeable feeling of being cased, of being judged a rube.

Slimy. The whole thing makes me willing to deal with loud upstairs neighbors, larcenous landlords, malfunctioning laundry.

I know what you mean. You have to be sort of guarded, everybody has an angle. Part of the problem is that, not having done this before, I don't feel totally confident that I'm not a rube.

On the other hand, when you lay out the neighbors and landlords and such, it seems pretty likely that it's all worthwhile. Or maybe we are just swapping those for the malfunctioning furnace and the leaky roof, who knows...
